Tigers get off to a fast start and earn third win over Delta Devils

The Missouri Tigers have struggled to get off to quick, clean starts against their first three opponents. Although the level of competition wasn’t even against Mississippi Valley State, the Tigers did just that in their 111-39 loss to the Delta Devils.

Not only did the Tigers get off to a good start, but they had the best three-point shooting night of their season thus far. They totaled 15 successes in 31 attempts, surpassing the season record. The mark of 48.4% constitutes the second best result of the season.

This fast start can be attributed to buckets in transition, at the free throw line and from the perimeter. Guard Tamar Bates, who finished with 15 points on the night, opened the scoring for the Tigers with a three. Bates needed more shots in these early games and he got them tonight.

It seemed like everyone had a great game against the Delta Devils. This could be due to his lackluster defense, or maybe everyone on offense was clicking. Every scholarship player who saw the Tigers field tonight scored. The only two who didn’t were JV guards Brown and Jeremy Sanchez.

“What I’ve tried to focus on is that it’s not about getting started. It’s just about getting a few minutes and you’ll get your opportunity, just make sure you take advantage of it.” , Gates said.

The trio of rookies got considerable playing time against the Delta Devils, all of whom played double-digit minutes. This experience is valuable for everyone, especially when it comes to erasing any feelings of nervousness or anxiety.

“It’s great to see some of our younger players play the minutes that they play, get rid of their jitters and jitters and ultimately continue to grow,” Gates said.

Annor Boateng, who was a member of the starting lineup and played the most minutes all season. He finished with 10 points and three rebounds in 25 minutes. Center Peyton Marshall scored his first point at the free throw line, going just one for two at the line. He also grabbed a rebound, two assists and two blocks to add to his stat line.

Marcus Allen, who is becoming a defensive staple for the Tigers, scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds to add to the impressive list of first-year players. As Gates continues to determine his rotation for SEC play and the subsequent slate of non-conference games, these early performances from the freshman will continue to impact that decision.

The Tigers continued to shoot from the perimeter, with transfer guard Marques Warrick leading the way. He was perfect from the perimeter on three attempts and extended an ever-growing first-half lead for the Tigers. Warrick’s only miss from the perimeter all night came late in the second half with just 1:15 left.

Leading as much as they did at the end of the first half, the Tigers locked the game away with plenty of time to play. A team’s game plan can change or tone down when a team leads as much as the Tigers did at halftime, who were 51-19, but that didn’t deter Gates’ team from playing as well as hard as she could.

Bates and guard Anthony Robinson II, who got the start in place of injured guard Tony Perkins, continued their momentum to open the second half. Robinson II carried a bucket to the rim and scored another on an offensive rebound, also earning a one-shot trip to the foul line.

Thanks to the large margin between the two teams, Gates relied on his bench for most of the second half. That’s when Missouri fans saw Boateng, Warrick and company shine. Although the bench was empty, starting forward Mark Mitchell had a short scoring spurt in the second half that included two triples and a few trips to the rim.

The Tigers continued to score and increase their lead late in the match. Forward Aidan Shaw saw his opening minutes late, making the most of his playing time to hit a three and add an emphatic dunk on the fast break. Boateng also caught a lob from Shaw to add to the excitement.

As the buzzer sounded, the Tigers secured their largest margin of victory in program history, a whopping 72-point victory. It was also the first time Missouri had scored 100 or more points since Nov. 6, 2023, in its season opener last year against Arkansas Pine-Bluff, scoring 101. The outpouring of points in table and the number of people who contributed should hopefully give the Tigers a boost in the future.

Missouri has a week off before its next game, but that doesn’t mean the Tigers will take too much time off.

“We’ve been rats and we’re still going to hit the gym. I mean, don’t get me wrong, we know we have a lot of work to do. It’s a great game. It’s good and all,” said declared the attacker. » said Jacob Crews.

They will have another chance on the field at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday, November 22 against the Pacific Tigers at Mizzou Arena.
