Amazon trucks and trailers cause problems at business park

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Horns blare and large vehicles brake in what employees at a business park say is a daily problem.

“It’s getting to the point where in an emergency we wouldn’t be able to get a fire truck or an ambulance here to take care of our employees,” Deborah Hardesty said. “Because there’s no way for traffic to get in and out. »

Hardesty is an executive at a local company near Heller Street in south Louisville, and Amazon trucks and trailers have turned that street into a headache. She said it all started when another business moved in nearby in 2023 and began doing business with the online retail giant.

“They take up an entire lane, park or just drop their trailers and abandon them,” Hardesty said.

This is Marsden Services, which simply does not have enough space. Trucks are constantly coming and going, and when they can’t drop off their trailers, drivers park to wait or leave.

trying to find a place to park. That creates problems for truckers like Jose Alvarez, who can’t get his cargo to other nearby locations, like the Norfolk train station.

“Sometimes it takes us hours to get here,” he said. “Sometimes we have to cancel loading and leave. »

LMPD did not respond to a request for comment, but was involved.

“Every day they block the road. The police come, kick them out and they continue to do it,” Alvarez said.

Hardesty contacted Marsden, hoping to offer a solution, but without success.

WAVE News reached out to Amazon for a statement on the long lines and trailers, which reads:

“We expect all carriers delivering on our behalf to adhere to our policies and follow state and local traffic laws. We appreciate that WAVE has brought this to our attention and are looking into the situation.

It is against the municipal code to park or leave a caravan on the road.

Hardesty said the location is just a logistical nightmare and there are better places in Louisville for the volume of business.

“In this area alone, there is a lot of warehouse space and space available,” she said. “I just don’t think it’s the one.”

One driver said that when a trailer is dropped off and towed, Amazon pays the bill. Another said: “It’s nothing. »

Hardesty said she hopes the problem will be partly resolved so LMPD can focus on bigger issues.
