All eyes are on the race for the White House in the United States of America. Donald Trump and Kamala Harris face off.

While many South Africans are following the situation from a distance, two locals are watching the action unfold in a more personal way.

Takalani Molaoa and Monthati Masebe, both studying in the United States, shared their experience of elections at ground level.

More worry than enthusiasm

Molaoa, who benefits from a sports scholarship at Northwest Missouri State University described the feeling as more worry than enthusiasm among his group of friends.

Based in Maryville, Missouri, the Polokwane native said those she interacted with were leaning more toward Democratic candidate Harris.

Molaoa, who is on a tennis scholarship in the United States, also expressed concern about being a student from another country in the United States if Trump takes power.

The former president has previously expressed his desire to get rid of all illegal aliens, with Molaoa saying she was concerned about the impact this could have on those who were there legally.

She has previously noted that more universities are sponsoring American students rather than foreign students.

The difference in student politics

Masebe, a student at Duke University, noticed how different it was student politics is in the US versus South Africa.

Based in Durham, North Carolina, she says the South African student political scene is much stronger.

“People organize, lobby and engage in political conversations differently (in America), so there isn’t as much open public debate about which direction people are leaning,” he said. -she declared.

Masebe added that as a result, it was difficult to feel like you were on the pitch.
