Barry Keoghan’s forgotten Irish drama is on TV tonight

Barry Keoghan is known for his recent films as the social media phenomenon Salt burn and Oscar winner The Banshees of Inisherin.

However, some viewers might not be familiar with some of his earlier work. If you are free tonight, you will have the opportunity to watch one of Keoghan’s lesser known films, Black ’47broadcast on Film4 at 12:20 a.m..

Directed by Lance Daly, the film is set in Connemara during the Great Irish Famine. The title refers to the famine’s most devastating year, 1847, commonly known as “Black ’47”.

The story follows an Irish Catholic soldier who decides to desert the British army after years of fighting abroad. He wants to reunite with his family, so he embarks on a dangerous journey to reach his village.

As a supporting actor, Keoghan plays Private Hobson, an idealistic young English soldier. He is joined in the cast by Hugo Weaving, James Frecheville, Jim Broadbent, Stephen Rea, Freddie Fox, Moe Dunford and Sarah Greene.

Following its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in 2018, the film received mostly positive reviews, earning a 78% approval rating (from 54 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes.

Black ’47 grounds its grim, realistic action in deceptively deep genre storytelling, even as its epic ambitions arguably exceed its scope,” reads the critics consensus on the review aggregator site.

Before playing in Black ’47Barry Keoghan was already beginning to gain notoriety thanks to his work with Christopher Nolan in Dunkirk and Yorgos Lanthimos in The killing of a sacred deerboth released in 2017.

Now a world star, the Irish actor is playing this year in Andrea Arnold’s Bird And Make them falland joined the cast for Netflixit’s highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie.

Black ’47 will be broadcast on Film 4 at 12:20 a.m. (Wednesday).
