This will prove my innocence, says CPI-M leader Divya after release from jail

Minutes after CPI-M leader PP Divya walked out of jail on Friday after securing bail in Kannur’s ADM Naveen Babu suicide, she told media that she was confident that she would be able to prove her innocence.

“I will prove my innocence and I trust the justice system. Just like Naveen Babu’s family, I too want a thorough investigation into the entire incident,” Divya said.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing away of Naveen Babu. I have been in the public domain for almost two decades. Since the beginning, I have cooperated with the officials and everything I said was done without any malice,” Divya added.

Earlier in the day, a court in Kannur granted bail to Divya and after completing all procedures, she was released from the women’s jail here at 5 p.m.

Soon after the court granted her bail, Divya’s lawyer said that this is normal as there are guidelines for everything.

“Now when the trial against Divya takes place, we are confident that we will be able to prove that she is innocent. A lot of things need to be revealed and this will happen when the case comes to trial in court.”, a declared the lawyer.

Reacting to the grant of bail, Naveen Babu’s wife Manjusha said she had nothing to add at the moment.

“We will talk to our lawyer and decide what to do next. Later, I will talk to you (the media),” Manjusha said. On Tuesday, the court heard all three parties – the defense, the prosecution and also Babu’s family – and posted the case for final orders for Friday.

Divya has been lodged in Kannur jail since October 29 after her anticipatory bail application was rejected, and she surrendered before the police investigation team.

On Tuesday, Divya’s lawyer said she was innocent and had made no mistake in trying to establish that Babu had taken a bribe, something she strongly objected to.

The roles of Kannur district collector Arun Vijayan and TV Prasanth, who said he paid bribe to Babu to get sanction for his petrol pump, also came up.

Meanwhile, on November 1, she was questioned by the police for around four hours.

The sequence of events that led to Divya ending up in jail began when, despite not being invited, she showed up at Babu’s farewell ceremony on October 14 and made some remarks reviews.

When this incident happened, Kannur district collector Arun Vijayan, who presided over the ceremony, remained silent and did not make any statement after the departure of the “uninvited” Divya, making curt remarks against Babu.

Babu committed suicide the next day (October 15) and following the furore, Divya resigned as the Kannur district panchayath president.

She was on the run for several days after a complaint was filed against her on October 17.
