Simon Doull explained why he called it quits in 2018 when he said Shubman Gill’s career would surpass that of Prithvi Shaw as the star batter played a calm and composed knock in the ongoing Mumbai Test against New Zealand on Saturday November 2. Gill and Shaw were teammates at the U-19 level when India won the World Cup in 2018 in New Zealand.

Doull, while speaking to JioCinema, said it was impressive to see Gill make such a change between series. The former New Zealand pacer said that when he saw Gill in 2018, he knew the star batter would outperform Shaw as the latter had technical flaws at that time.

“When you think of a young man who can change things in the middle of a series, that’s quite impressive. And I saw Shubman for the first time during the U-19 World Cup in New -Zealand and there has been so much talk around Prithvi Shaw at this point, I made a pretty bold statement that Shubman Gill’s career would far surpass Prithvi Shaw’s because there were technical flaws in it. Prithvi Shaw and Shubman just didn’t seem to have any technical flaws at that point,” says Doull.

Gill wants big series and hundreds

Doull went on to say that Gill makes adjustments during a series because he wants to score big runs and hundreds at Test level. The commentator said that he believes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gill and Rishabh Pant will be the future of the Indian batting order in the years to come.

“And so I’ve followed his career all the way since that time. And what’s impressive about him to me is that he’s able to change things, he’s able to absorb information and deal with them and has the ability to make these subtle changes “Because I think he just wants to score points. When I interviewed him, he told me I wanted big points and that’s the hunger of this man. ”

“And I think he wants them at Test level as well. Yes, the white ball means a lot to him, but he wants runs here. He wants big runs at this level. And you know that can only be good omen.”
