Mount Kenya leaders rally behind Kahiga to succeed Gachagua after his dismissal: “Kenya needs you”

Nyéri – A section of governors have called on Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga to assume a prominent leadership role in the Western Mount Kenya region following the impeachment of former Vice President Rigathi Gachagua.

The Senate and the National Assembly got an overwhelming vote to impeach Gachaguasparking discussions among leaders about Kahiga’s potential role in regional and national leadership.

Why do governors want Mutahi to replace Gachagua?

At a celebration honoring Kahiga’s recent attainment of a doctorate in leadership, Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki praised Kahiga’s abilities, describing him as a national leader who should not limit himself to the county of Nyeri.

Njuki stressed that Kahiga’s leadership potential extends beyond the county boundaries and would benefit the wider Mount Kenya West region.

“Mr Mutahi Kenya needs you. You have served the people of Nyeri very well but you should not be limited to within this county,” Njuki said.

Nandy Governor Stephen Sang, who was also present at the event, echoed Njuki’s sentiments, saying Kahiga is fit to take on broader responsibilities on the national stage.

Sang’s endorsement further fueled the call for Kahiga to take on an expanded role following Gachagua’s impeachment.

“We know for sure that Kahiga is not just for Nyeri. It is an important building block for bigger things in this country, which it is already doing,” Sang’ said.

The leaders also called for peace and unity between Mt. Kenya West and East following the swearing-in of the former Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as Kenya’s new vice president.

“Let us never leave a region divided because of politics. Let us never get to the point where I cannot visit Nyeri and Governor Kahiga cannot come to my region,” Njuki advised.

Kahiga urges Ruto to keep Nyeri economically inclusive

On Gachagua’s dismissal, Governor Kahiga called on President William Ruto to ensure that Nyeri remains an integral part of national development plans.

He urged Ruto not to marginalize the county, pointing out that Nyeri residents strongly supported the Kenya Kwanza administration in the last election. The county leader stressed the need to continue to focus economic efforts on Nyeri.

“Nyeri should not be excluded from the government of Kenya. We voted for this administration and we still have three years to keep our promises.”

Gachagua makes humble appeal to William Ruto

Furthermore, former Vice President Rigathi Gachagua called on MPs to speed up the passage of important billsemphasizing the need for swift action similar to that demonstrated during his impeachment.

Gachagua expressed concern that the Coffee Bill 2023 and the Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill have been languishing in Parliament for over a year without being passed.

During his speech, Gachagua urged MPs from the Mount Kenya region who supported his impeachment to prioritize the needs of their constituents by advocating for the passage of the coffee bill.
