Atishi launches Delhi Solar Portal; Will help electricity consumers become “prosumers”

Atishi said the portal would help achieve the 750 MW rooftop solar power generation target.

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Wednesday launched the ‘Delhi Solar Portal’ as a one-stop solution for installation of rooftop solar panels by residents of the national capital.

Delhi residents can now become ‘prosumers’ (energy consumers who generate additional solar energy) by installing rooftop solar panels using the portal.

He said the rooftop solar panels would not only make electricity bills zero but would also help earn Rs 700-900 per month.

Atishi launched the portal at the Delhi secretariat and said it would help achieve the rooftop solar power generation target of 750 MW, as per the AAP government’s solar policy launched on March 14 this year.

Installation of rooftop solar panels will help consumers with more than 400 units of monthly power consumption also benefit from subsidies, the Delhi Chief Minister said at a press conference.

The portal will provide all the information needed to install roof panels. It will have a solar calculator to estimate the solar power generation capacity on a specific roof, the savings to be made, the list of suppliers and the rate of solar power plants, she said.

Additionally, net metering and subsidy applications could be submitted through the portal and consumers will not be required to visit an office for this purpose, Atishi said.

Domestic power consumers who generate additional solar power beyond their requirements will get a production-based incentive from the government at the rate of Rs 3/unit, the chief minister said.

Electricity consumers generating additional solar power (technically called prosumers) will be paid at the rate of Rs 3 per unit for solar plants up to 3 KW and Rs 2 per unit for plants up to 10 KW, said a senior government official.

Collective housing societies and residents’ welfare associations will also benefit from the generation-based incentive at the rate of Rs 2 per unit for installation of rooftop panels, the officer said.

Commercial and industrial consumers will benefit from the incentive of Re 1 per unit, the official said, adding that a 1 KW plant generates around 100 units and the cost of setting up the plants ranges from Rs 40,000 to 60,000 by KW.

A national level subsidy of Rs 78,000 is provided for the installation of a 3 KW solar power plant. The Delhi government is providing an additional subsidy of Rs 2,000 per KW up to 5 KW, he added.
