Auburn turns around due to mid-trip ‘ruckus’ between players ahead of clash with No. 4 Houston: report

The Auburn men’s basketball team is going to be a little late getting to Houston.

The Tigers’ flight west had to be reversed due to a midway “ruckus” between a group of players that could have escalated into a brawl, according to Jeff Goodman of Field of 68. He later reported that there was shouting and players clashed, but there was no actual punching.

The Auburn flight reportedly traveled for 45 minutes before returning home, with another flight to Houston scheduled for later Friday. Auburn will face No. 4 Houston at 9:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.

One of the pilots involved described the incident as a scuffle with air traffic control, saying two players had gotten into an altercation. There is also a report from a social media account created last month identifying a group of three players who got into a physical altercation, but this is completely unconfirmed.

“We are having an altercation on board and we would like to declare an emergency and land,” the pilot said. “We have a group of basketball players fighting. The cockpit is secure, the front level is contained at the moment. We want police on the court because we had two players get into a physical altercation.”

All of this suddenly makes the use of Auburn players very interesting against Houston, as the police presence requested on the field indicates legal repercussions for the players involved. It’s also likely that Auburn head coach Pearl won’t be eager to use players who have put such a damper on the team’s travel plans, but you never know.

Auburn opened its season Wednesday with a 94-43 victory against Vermont and is currently ranked No. 11 in the AP poll. Houston is currently a -225 favorite on the money line at BetMGM, with a spread of 5.5 points.
