Canada is trying to persuade other countries of the need to allow Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes on targets on Russian territory.

Details: Joly indicated that Canada was in favor of allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russia.

She stressed that this is part of Ukraine’s right to defend itself against Russian aggression.

Background:

• Previously, US intelligence and the Pentagon believed that allowing Ukraine to carry out long-range strikes on Russian territory could bring kyiv more harm than benefit and therefore recommended maintaining the current policy .

• Last month, the US president hinted at the possibility of lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons, saying his administration was “working on this issue.”

• At the same time, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin supported US restrictions on long-range strikes on Ukraine with Western weapons and insisted that they can defeat Russia even without such capability.
