On October 24, a roundtable discussion bringing together women scientists from China and abroad was held at the World Science and Technology Development Forum (WSTDF) 2024. The dialogue was titled “Encouraging women’s participation in science and technology.”

Xiang Qiao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and vice president of the China Association for Science and Technology, moderated the dialogue. She expressed hope to strengthen friendships among women scientists, deepen cooperation and create a favorable research environment.

Nearly twenty exceptional women scientists from national and international backgrounds participated. Susan Wessler, Academician of the US National Academy of Sciences, highlighted the importance of women’s participation in scientific research; Elsa Reichmanis, Academician of the US National Academy of Engineering, spoke about the importance of seizing major career opportunities; and Chen Chunying, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the spirit of inheritance among women scientists.

During the sharing speeches, Professor Megan Robertson of the University of Houston, Professor Jennifer Schaefer of the University of Notre Dame and Cao Xiaofeng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discussed the mechanisms, methods and results to support and improve the growth of women scientists from various perspectives.

Duan Huiling, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, chaired the roundtable, facilitating in-depth discussions on topics such as “Experience, practices and thoughts on participating in bilateral or multilateral international cooperation and exchanges between China and the United States.

The minds of women scientists presented at this forum highlight the practical importance of supporting the growth of female talent in science and technology and strengthening the presence of women in the scientific community.
