Kinney Drugs Provides Guidance on Updated CDC Recommendations for Pneumonia and COVID-19

Kinney Drugs has released new guidance following recent updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on pneumonia and COVID-19 vaccinations. According to CDC guidelines from October 23, the recommended age for pneumonia vaccination was lowered to 50 years old, from 65 years old. Additionally, people over 65 and those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised are advised to receive a second dose of the 2024-2025 COVID vaccine. -19 (KP.2) six months after their initial injection.

Kinney Drugs encourages eligible individuals to schedule their vaccinations early, especially given the increased risk of pneumonia and COVID-19 infections during the fall and winter months. “The CDC’s decision to lower the age for pneumonia vaccination gives more adults the opportunity for early protection, especially as the risk of serious infection increases with age,” said said Shannon Miller, senior director of healthcare operations for Kinney Drugs. Miller emphasized that both vaccines not only reduce serious outcomes, but can also help protect against chronic illnesses such as Long COVID.

For those aged 50 to 64, pneumonia vaccinations are now recommended, while those aged 65 and over are advised to get both pneumonia and seasonal COVID-19 vaccinations if they haven’t done so yet. Patients in both age groups who received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine this season should schedule their second dose six months later. Kinney Drugs suggests that people who are immunocompromised consult their health care providers to ensure an optimal dosing plan.

Vaccinations can be scheduled at any Kinney Drugs location, with walk-in and online appointments available. For additional health support, Kinney also offers a range of over-the-counter diagnostic tests, including a 3-in-1 test that detects COVID-19, Influenza A and Influenza B.

The CDC’s adjustments reflect the continued need for annual COVID-19 vaccines due to the evolving nature of the virus, similar to that of the flu vaccine. This season’s updated COVID-19 vaccine targets the Omicron KP.2 variant and is approved for people ages 12 and older, with pediatric doses available for people as young as six months old.
