Nick Bosa could only watch from the sidelines as the San Francisco 49ers suffered their third loss of the season while leading in the fourth quarter, falling to .500 again. The star passer was unable to make an impact on the game as the 49ers lost 20-17 to their division rival Seattle Seahawks in a frustrating collapse.

“Brutal,” Bosa said of his absence during the game’s most crucial moments. “The most important moment of the match for me was that I couldn’t be. I hate running out of time. That’s why I persevered last week, and I hope it doesn’t It won’t be too long (for him to be absent).”

Bosa had a stellar performance before leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury initially reported as a hip issue. Many thought it was related to the hip injury he battled through last week, an injury Bosa described as one of the toughest he’s ever endured. On Sunday, he failed to overcome the latest setback.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan clarified after the game that Bosa’s latest injury was not to the same hip. When asked if Bosa might be available next week against the Green Bay Packers, Shanahan replied: “I hope so. I mean, I don’t know anything (beyond) what I told you said guys. It’s plugged/oblique, and it’s his other plugged, and he couldn’t get back to the game, which means it was bothering him so we’ll see how he does tomorrow. It’s not too serious, but that’s all we really know at the moment.

The injury occurred on Bosa’s second sack of Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith, who then sealed the game with a critical scramble into the end zone in the final seconds.

“I guess I was compensating,” Bosa said. “I passed last week, and the same thing happened to my other oblique, so we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”

Shanahan acknowledged that Bosa’s absence during the Seahawks’ final drive was significant and could have changed the outcome of the game.

“I thought we had a few chances to get to him (Smith),” Shanahan said. “I think we had a sack or two on that last drive, but those two scrambles killed us.”

Asked about his level of concern about missing upcoming games, Bosa admitted: “It’s definitely there. I don’t know. I’ll have to see.”

Other injury updates

Shanahan provided additional injury updates after the game. Linebacker Tatum Béthunewho exited prematurely, may have suffered an MCL injury. Rookie cornerback Fox Green played thanks to a finger injury.

Wide receiver Jacob Cowing was ruled out due to concussion, while full-back Kyle Juszczyk was also evaluated for a concussion before being cleared to return to action.
