It’s been a long road for the Eagle High football team. But their practice paid off in landing a ticket to the 6A state championship. I’m your Eagle Neighborhood reporter, Alexander Huddleston, speaking with a few seniors before what will be their last chance to win the title.

“Since the beginning of the year, our goal was to win state. That’s what we’re saying this week. Our goal is not to be here. It’s to win it,” said l Senior tight end Jack Giannini.

Eagle High School hasn’t won state since 2009. The last time they were in contention was 2011. The same year, coach James Cluphf began his coaching career at Eagle.

Coach Cluphf smiled and said, “To see these guys succeed in their first year was pretty cool. Then you go years and years and the more you coach, the more seasons you have, and the more every win is precious. It all adds up to where we are now, I couldn’t be more proud of our children.

“It’s awesome. Like our senior class, we wanted to leave a legacy here,” senior safety Chance Jones said.

But for the team’s seniors, this will be the last time they strap in for the Mustangs.

Senior corner Aaron Zrno explained, “It’s just awesome to be able to play all the games that I was guaranteed. Like, just to get to that last game. Not a lot of guys can do that.”

Talking with the seniors about this last game is even more special because they are playing on blue.

“As a kid, it was like it was the blue grass. It’s a dream to play there,” Jones smiled.

Zrno being a Vandal fan, laughed “Probably one of the coolest places in the country.”

“I was looking forward to playing there for the state title and I’m excited to do it my senior year,” Giannini added.

Last year, Eagle was number one in the state, dominating its opponents all season. Unfortunately, they were upset by Coeur d’Alene in the playoffs last year.

Cluphf continued, “We’ve definitely faced more adversity so far. I think that’s something our kids have been able to lean on and respond to.”

“This season has been really special. Even losing two games allowed us to improve and be the best we can be,” finished Zrno.

Giannini smiled sternly as he said: “This is our revenge tour. We played Rigby last year and we beat them. We’re looking to do that again this year.

The Mustangs will face Rigby at Albertsons Stadium this Saturday with kickoff set for 2 p.m. I’ll be there with the blanket.
