Heart Walk in Mobile honors lives and raises awareness

MOBILE, AlabamaWALA) – More than 500 people gathered at the University of South Alabama for the 2024 Mobile Heart Walk, a heartfelt event to raise awareness of heart health and raise critical funds for cardiovascular research.

“This year we had a nature trail and a scenic view, so very happy,” said Eric Lee, director of development for the Alabama Gulf Coast American Heart Association.

For Kay Lang and Jontaisha, participating in the Heart Walk is an annual initiative.

“I had a daughter who had a heart transplant about 11 years ago,” Lang said. “So every year we try to walk to support her and then also help her by being someone who gives advice and information about heart issues, heart problems and heart health in general.”

Lang says her daughter, C’Ce, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy as a young child. The disease affects the heart muscle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood properly. Despite the operation, Lang says she died.

“We still represent her, but we’re just trying to help other people not go through what we went through,” adds Lang.

A powerful message as Lang and Jontaisha honor the memory of their loved ones.

“I love it,” Jontaisha said. “I’m very hands-on, so I’m pushing everyone behind him saying, you’ve got this, you’ve got this, keep going.”

Event organizers say the goal is to raise $200,000 and so far they’ve secured $178,500. To make a donation, click here.
