WCSO concerned about cryptocurrency scam

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says cyber scams double during the holiday months and right now a worrying scam is happening.

Scammers call people and ask them to pay a warrant fee to the sheriff’s office. The phone number is cloned to look like the correct WCSO phone number, but it is not.

WCSO Detective Richard Spaulding says there are red flags to look out for to know if it’s a scam.

First, WCSO will not call you to handle money order fees or ask you to stay on the phone for any bank withdrawals.

They will never ask you to use cryptocurrency to pay for these money orders and will not ask you to deposit the money in person.

If you receive a call like this, you are encouraged to report it to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
