Hezbollah is weakened but still very deadly – Israel News

Israel began its ground operation against Hezbollah October 1st. This means that the entire month of October reflects a month of war on the ground in Lebanon. At the same time, Hezbollah seeks to carry out daily attacks against Israel using rockets and drones.

Hezbollah increased the range of its rocket attacks in response to Israel’s launch of Operation Northern Arrows in September. Israel’s initial targets were Hezbollah commanders, and the IDF used the air force for precision strikes.

The battle with Hezbollah in October increased the number of casualties Israel suffered in the war. A total of 88 Israeli soldiers and civilians were killed in October. Among them, around thirty soldiers were killed in combat in Lebanon. Nineteen of those killed in October died in combat in Gazaaccording to Ynet.

Thirteen people were killed in Hezbollah rocket and drone attacks in northern Israel. Six soldiers were also killed in a Hezbollah drone attack on a training base, and two killed in the Golan. The Israeli military says more than 4,400 projectiles entered Israel from Lebanon in October. The Israeli military also estimates that more than 1,500 Hezbollah members were killed in October.

Israel’s data on Hezbollah attacks comes in several forms. One of the forms contains data covering a year of war from October 2023 to October 2024. Hezbollah has been attacking Israel since October 8, 2023.

In a year of fighting, the IDF has killed more than 800 Hezbollah members in Lebanon. Around 450 of them were killed between October 2023 and September 2024. Many of them were killed in the pager explosion and also in the strikes on Beirut targeting Hezbollah commanders, as well as during the wave of strikes on September 23. This means that several hundred were killed September 17 to October 7.

The Israeli military attacked thousands of targets in Lebanon during the year from October 2023 to early October 2024. This figure increased significantly once Israel launched Operation Northern Arrows on September 23.

It is worth comparing the high number of Hezbollah attacks in October 2024 with what we know about the year of conflict that took place before the ground offensive. During a year of conflict with Hezbollah, a total of 12,400 projectiles entered Israel from Lebanon. That’s an average of about 1,000 per month and 33 projectiles per day. Some of them were drones.

Hezbollah’s use of rockets and drones has been relatively consistent from month to month. For example, as of August 2024, Hezbollah launched 7,5000 rockets and more than 200 drones into Israel. In contrast, during the first six months of Hezbollah attacks, a total of 3,100 rockets and drones were launched into Israel by the Iran-backed terrorist group.

During the first six months of the conflict, the IDF struck 1,400 targets in Lebanon. To put this into perspective, the IDF struck 1,600 targets in a single day, September 23, when the war against Hezbollah began. Several thousand other Hezbollah targets were struck between April 2024 and mid-September 2024 before Israel massively intensified its strikes.

In October, the Israeli army intensified its strikes against Hezbollah, and the ground offensive took a toll on Hezbollah. More than 1,500 Hezbollah members may have been killed in October. This is in addition to the approximately 1,000 people killed between October 8, 2023 and early October 2024.

What do we know about Hezbollah’s daily rocket attacks throughout the month of October? The Israeli military publishes data almost daily reflecting the number of projectiles entering Israel each day. For example, on October 3, a total of 230 projectiles entered Israel.

These include drones and rockets. In the first days of October, as the ground offensive began, Hezbollah intensified its rocket fire compared to previous months. Around 200 rockets enter Israel every day. There was an increase during Yom Kippur. By mid-October, the number of rockets and drones fired at Israel had declined slightly, to around 150 per day. By the end of the month, the decline had continued to around 100 per day. Despite this decrease, rockets and drones are deadly. For example, rocket attacks have killed people in Majd al-Krum, Tarshiha and Shfaram over the past week.

Israel and Hezbollah increase attacks

The trend in October is that both Israel and Hezbollah have intensified their attacks. However, Hezbollah suffered attrition during the fighting. Its rocket arsenal has also been depleted. Israel’s defense minister said Hezbollah may have lost up to 80 percent of some types of rockets.

Hezbollah started the war with 150,000 rockets, so the group still has tens of thousands of rockets. It can launch 100 rockets per day for several more months or even a year. The group also owns many drones and is likely manufacturing more locally. However, as the group was pushed back from the border, it lost some of its anti-tank guided missiles as many of them were discovered by the IDF. This leaves Hezbollah weakened but still very deadly.
