Manchester United have concrete interest in Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies – and have already conducted an ‘informal enquiry’ into his signing, according to reports in Germany.

Davies, 23, looks set to leave Bayern on a free transfer next summer, with his contract at the Allianz Arena coming to an end – barring a late U-turn.

And United could be the club to take advantage, with the Canadian on their radar to become first choice left-back according to Sky Germany.

The left side of United’s defense has been a problem for Erik ten Hag, with Luke Shaw suffering repeated injuries and versatile Diogo Dalot having to cover on both sides of the backline while Tyrell Malacia is a long-term absentee.

Davies would be allowed to sign a pre-contract with a club outside Germany as early as January – just 10 weeks away – but United are not the only option.

Manchester United keen to sign Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich next summer

Real Madrid are believed to be leading the race to sign the future free agent and have long admired his speed and attacking threat on the left flank.

Real signed Kylian Mbappe as a free agent last summer and are reportedly interested in another blockbuster free signing to bolster their defense.

But the transfer is not settled – as fellow suitor Barcelona indicated earlier this month – leaving the door open for United to potentially pounce.

Ten Hag has expressed his frustration with player availability in recent times, with left-back being a key area where difficulties have been exposed.

“It holds us back in our levels, and also in our position in the league, because when you don’t have the players available, you can’t field the best team,” Ten Hag said this week.

“That’s what’s holding us back right now. We need more players available, often, and we must all work together on this point – that is to say the players, the technical staff, all the rest of the staff.

“We have to do better to have more players available because we know that when we have them we are a really difficult team to play.

“And when we have them, we can really succeed.” This is what we have demonstrated over the last two months.

United are 12th in the Premier League and are yet to win the Europa League, putting their chances of Champions League qualification in jeopardy – which would be a key attraction for a player of Davies’ caliber.
