The world’s largest captive crocodile dies in Australia

Cassius, the world’s largest crocodile in captivity, has died in a wildlife reserve on Green Island, Australia. Measuring nearly 5.5 meters (18 feet) long and weighing almost a ton, Cassius was estimated to be over 110 years old, although his exact age is uncertain.

Captured in the Northern Territory in the 1980s, Cassius became a popular tourist attraction at Marineland Melanesia, where he lived for decades. In 2011, it was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest crocodile in captivity.

The sanctuary announced his death on social media, calling him “our beloved companion” and a “cherished member of our family.” Cassius had a reputation for his wild antics, previously known for catching livestock and attacking boat propellers before his capture.

George Craig, the habitat’s founder, purchased Cassius in 1987 and formed a deep bond with the crocodile for 37 years.

Habitat noted that Craig had recently moved to Cairns and that Cassius’ health deteriorated shortly after. “It was very old and was thought to live beyond the years of a wild crocodile,” the sanctuary said.

Marineland Melanesia expressed its gratitude to all those who visited Cassius during his life, adding that operations may be limited in the coming days as they mourn the loss of their iconic resident.
