“Singham Again” is the third highest-grossing film worldwide this weekend

Indian police saga Singham again released in theaters on November 1, and the Hindi film got off to a good start at the ticket counters. Directed by Rohit Shetty, the film crossed $22 million at the worldwide box office, ranking third on Comscore’s list of top-performing films worldwide over the weekend. Singham again stars Ajay Devgn in the lead role of Bajirao Singham while Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar reprise their roles as Simba And Souryavanshi respectively. The film also features Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, Jackie Shroff, Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

Singham again achieved an opening global collection of $7.7 million on Friday, November 1. Taking advantage of the festive high tide of Diwali in India, the film became the second-largest Hindi film in terms of opening for the year 2024. It grossed $5.2 million on Friday in India. Street 2 remains this year’s highest Hindi opening, with a worldwide opening day score of 9.1 million.

By the end of the second day, Devgn’s film crossed the $10 million mark, earning $12.1 million in India and $14.9 million worldwide. As Singham again By the end of the weekend, the film’s total worldwide gross was $22.2 million. It earned $17.4 million in three days at the ticket counters in India. Only in US markets Singham again earned just over $2 million in three days.

Singham again is the fifth film in filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s ‘police universe’ which began with Devgn’s film. Singham in 2011. Devgn reprized his role in Singham Returns in 2014 and Ranveer Singh entered the universe with Simba in 2018. Akshay Kumar joined the team in 2021 with the film Sooryavanshi which also starred Katrina Kaif.

The film is true to its world of crazy police officers, often defying logic but honest, courageous and patriotic, who must save the world from the demonic figures of criminals. Devgn leads the pack as Ram aka ACP Bajirao Singham. Singh is his Hanuman, Kumar his Lakshman, Shroff is Sugriv and Kapoor is Sita. Shetty’s film leaves no doubt so that the audience does not know which actor plays which character in Ramayan. If Sita is kidnapped by Ravana, Hanuman plays Lanka and becomes Ram’s messenger. Ravana also kidnaps Sita exactly like the character in Ramayan. Through a presentation done by Avni (Kapoor) in the film, each cop is given a parallel scene to clarify the Ramayan reference.

Singham again arrives ten years after the second installment of the franchise and 13 years after the world first met Bajirao Singham. Much like the world he lives in, Shetty has improved his franchise and incorporated a policewoman into his story. One of many new entries in Singh franchise is Padukone’s Shakti Shetty. She calls Bajirao Singham her guru, follows his style and subverts his principles. Is Shakti Shetty making the world of Singham see a woman cop? No, that’s not the case, and that’s still not a good sign.

The best part of Singham again It’s also the worst: it’s over-the-top, dramatic, anti-rational and logical, and full of unrealistic moments. But the audience expects no less from a Shetty film, let alone a Shetty film Singham, inspired by Ramayan. This is too much expectation that Hindi movie lovers are placing from the film. The film does not go beyond what we were able to see and understand in the trailer. From the whistle-worthy entrance sequences to the epic plot, we know everything in advance.
