Constellation Cup Live Updates: Australian Diamonds vs New Zealand Silver Ferns Game 3

Border at main break

Five minutes left before halftime and the Diamonds are holding on a narrow lead with the running of the central pass.

SCORE: 23-22 Australia style

Nweke tip sees turnover

For some strange reason, Grace Nweke was high in the third goal as the Ferns tried to move the ball down the field instead of finding their way into the goal circle.

She tries to jump on a pass not intended for her in the left channel and touches it to see the ball go out of bounds. Australia takes the lead and converts. With goals coming from their usual central passes either side of this giveaway, they score three consecutive goals to take the lead.

SCORE: 20-19 Australia style

Jackson sneaks along the baseline

Australia made the first central pass of the second quarter, but they weren’t going to score first again, not on Kelly Jackson watch. The Silver Ferns GK intercepted a ball sent into the circle by the Australian captain Liz Watson and as New Zealand score this opportunity and their next central pass, they launch into the second half with back-to-back goals.

SCORE: 15-13 New Zealand style

Bruce returns to his best

The watch party goes OFFFFF watching Courtney and Jamie go OFFFFF!

-Jess

It’s great to see Courtney Bruce back to her best with goalkeeper Jess! She was a little underutilized in the first two matches due to injury. But we know that she is capable of great things in this face-to-face with Grace Nweke.

Jamie Lee Price for me, he is also one of the first contenders for the player of the match title. Made life difficult for Kimmy Poi and continues to perform defensively in wing defense.

Close the competition

Hey Brittany I’m scared…

-Natty

And for good reason, Natty! We could see this one going down to the wire.

QT: score level

New Zealand convert their next central pass to lock us in for the first break. Great way to start the game!

What to watch out for during the second trimester is that Bruce And Klau are currently the most penalized players on the field. They definitely caught the referee’s attention and have already received six penalties each. They will have to adapt and try to stay in the game in the future.

SCORE: 13-all

Australia on the front line

With 15 seconds remaining in the quarter, the Diamonds converted their next central pass to take the lead for the first time since the 45-second mark of the quarter. That’s three goals in a row.

SCORE: 13-12 Australia style

Impressive price

Jamie Lee Price recovered the ball at least four times during this first quarter. As she makes another interception on a pass intended for Kimmy Poi the Diamonds convert his effort to equalize the score.

SCORE: 12-all

Hadley’s Intelligence

The game turned into a game of tennis, as the ball continued to change possession over the final five minutes of the quarter. Trust intelligence and clinic Paige Hadley to bring a composed game to the Diamonds’ attack. Standing on the left edge of the circle, she makes a nifty bounce pass into Sophie Garbin right in front of the post.

SCORE: 11-10 New Zealand style

Bruce Block

We are halfway through the first quarter and Courtney Bruce begins to get into the heads of his opponents. First, she was blocked from the photo of Ekenasio but the referee judged it too close. SO Ekenasio missed the penalty shot on goal and Bruce thought she was the first to bounce. The referee calls her again to stay away. Ekenasio as she finally scores the goal.

SCORE: 9-7 New Zealand style

Midfield magic

Maddy Gordon has been one of the standout players in this series and once again, she proves why. Takes a nice interception on the edge of the Australian goal circle.

Unfortunately for the Silver Ferns, Jamie Lee Price is just as strong defensively. She pinches the ball just from below Gordon nose up at the other end, at the edge of the New Zealand circle. Australia return to the field and convert.

SCORE: 7-4 New Zealand style

Klau Pickup

Sarah Klau cuts a bounce pass intended to Améliaranne Ekenasio in the pocket, but Australia gives possession back in the middle of the field and the Silver Ferns finish what they started.

SCORE: 5-2 New Zealand style

New Zealand takes the lead

Garbin misses his second attempt at goal and the Silver Ferns capitalize. They pinch the rebound and advance all over the court in transition.

SCORE: 2-1 New Zealand style

Australia scores first

The Diamonds win the first central pass with a toss and it’s Sophie Garbin who converted the first goal of the match.

SCORE: 1-0 Australia style

The Kelpies win the Trans-Tasman Cup

If you’re wondering what happened in the Australia v New Zealand men’s series, the Kelpies beat the Net Blacks yesterday in Canberra to win the trophy again. They lead 3-0 and the final match will be played as a double-header alongside the Women’s Constellation Cup in Melbourne on Wednesday evening.

The starting 7 have arrived

Very good, a lot of changes in this formation of seven starters for the Diamonds. Sophie Dwyer gets the green light in GA as KieraAustin abandons the team. Dwyer has had a big impact coming off the bench in the last two games.

Jamie Lee Price moves to wing defense to make room for PAige Hadley has center, while Sarah Klau pushes in front of the goal defense while Courtney Bruce collects his usual starting bib from the goalkeeper. No sign of the potential newbie Georgie Horjus Again.

For the third game in a row, the Silver Ferns are running with the same starting seven. And why not? That works. Head coach Noéline Taurua is clearly satisfied with their production.

Not long now!

what time does the game start please

-Simon

Hi Simon, the match starts in about 14 minutes at 7pm AEDT. You can watch the match on Kayo Sports or Fox Netball if you are in Australia. If you’re abroad, you can sign up for Netball Pass and stream it to your phone or other smart device.

Sold in Perth

Reports suggest the match at Perth Arena is sold out. It is one of the largest netball stadiums in Australia and West Coast Fever regularly attracts over 10,000 people to its matches. So let’s hope they cheer loud and clear for the Diamonds tonight!

Australia must win everything from here

Not only do Australia need to win the next two matches in Perth and Melbourne to level the series, but to win the Constellation Cup they will also need to win a mini-match at the end of the fourth game.

In the last two series, when the series was tied at 2, it all came down to goal difference. But there was a change this year, introducing a 14-minute period of “series-deciding time.”

Why not just play an unequal number of games, you ask? Say three or five matches? Excellent question. We wonder the same thing…

Bold changes

After the Diamonds lost the first game in Wellington (64-50) and the second game in Auckland (63-52), the head coach of the Australian team Stacey Marinkovich made bold changes to his team on match day.

Experienced players Keira Austin, Kate Moloney And Joe Weston were all abandoned to make way for young guns. Goal attack/wing attack, 22 years old Georgie Horjus has been selected for her first ever match squad and is in contention for her debut after playing once again for the Adelaide Thunderbirds during the Super Netball season.

In defense, Rudi Ellis (two caps) and Matilda Garrett (five caps) got the nod on defense. Australians struggled to stop Silver Ferns shooter Grace Nweke and to stop the midfield kiwis from abruptly feeding on her. They will have to limit Nweke’s abilities if they hope to win tonight.
