WhatsApp Lists are here to bring order to the Wild West that is your inbox

  • WhatsApp’s recently leaked Lists feature officially began rolling out today.

  • Lists appear at the top of the WhatsApp home page, in the filter bar, making it easier to find important conversations.

  • Users can create up to 20 lists and they are completely private.

There has been a recent trend among WhatsApp’s new (and upcoming) features that most of them have been borrowed from Instagram. For reference, the messaging giant was recently spotted working on bringing music support for status updateswhile private mentions and likes Status updates have already started rolling out to users and will soon be available globally.

Elsewhere, more importantly, WhatsApp will finally benefit from lists of personalized emoji reactions, similar to what its sister platform Instagram already offers. The change means that users will see their 7 most used emojis first when reacting to a post, followed by other most used emojis that they use from time to time.

Today, finally, in a change not borrowed from Instagram, WhatsApp is officially rolling out its Previously leaked lists feature.

The new feature, as the name suggests, allows you to organize discussions into custom lists. Think of it as a feature that lets you isolate important contacts from the crowd based on specific categories and criteria. You are free to title your list as you wish: Family, Colleagues, Close Friends, etc., and to add as many contacts as possible. These will appear in the “filters” section of WhatsApp, which currently hosts All, Unread, Favorites, And Groups.

Lists are a welcome addition, especially for power users who primarily use WhatsApp for their daily, work, or school-related conversations. By providing a seamless way to locate specific chats right at the top of the app’s home page, Lists eliminate the need for aimless scrolling to get to the right conversation.

Your lists are completely private

If the feature has been rolled out to you (it hasn’t for us yet), you’ll see a plus icon right next to the default chat filters on the WhatsApp home page, as seen circled in the image above. By tapping the plus icon you should access the New list creator, where you can give it a title and add people or groups to it.

Users will be able to edit a created list, which includes changing its name and adding/removing contacts, simply by long-pressing it in the filter bar. In total, users will be able to create up to 20 lists and their position in the filter bar can be adjusted according to their priority. It’s also worth noting that the lists are completely private, meaning your contacts won’t be notified if you add them to a list like “annoying parents”, “people who chain message” and “people who send always text messages in capital letters.”

WhatsApp suggests that the lists began rolling out to users today “and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.”
