World’s first high-altitude para-sports center to be established in Leh; focus on the 2028 Paralympic Games

The world’s first high-altitude para-sports center will be established in Leh, Ladakh, with the aim of developing the skills and confidence of athletes ahead of the 2028 Paralympics.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by the Autonomous Ladakh Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF).

“It is a very proud feeling for us that Leh is establishing the world’s first-ever center for high-altitude Paralympic sports. Indian para-athletes won 29 medals, including seven gold, at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris and it “It’s a testament to the talent we have in our country,” said attorney Tashi Gyalson, LAHDC Chief Executive Advisor (CEC).

Until the center is completed, AMF will identify 15 Children with Special Needs (CwSN) from the UT region of Leh-Ladakh and they will undergo screening, counseling and training at their Infinity Parasports Academy and center rehabilitation in hyderabad.

“The opening of Leh Ladakh as a para-sports hub marks a new era not only for the region, but for India’s future in international competitions,” said Aditya Mehta, founder of the AMF.

List of sports to include: Parasports: archery; Athletics; Badminton; Blind football; Petanque; Canoe; Bike; Equestrian; Goal ball; Judo; Powerlifting; Rowing; Filming; Volleyball; Swimming; Table tennis, Taekwondo; Triathlon; Wheelchair basketball; Wheelchair fence; Wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

Winter games: para-alpine skiing; Parabiathlon; cross-country paraskiing; Para ice hockey; Para snowboarding and wheelchair curling. PTI UNG APA APA
