From the Archive: Kim Kardashian’s LACMA Art + Film Gala Attallah Cross Necklace Was Originally Worn by Princess Diana

Kim Kardashian loves good times, past and present. And at a time when the exclusivity of vintage and heirloom seems to be reaching its peak in terms of trends in the luxury space, what better way to capitalize on this than to give an archive piece from decades past, another flash of public knowledge. . For the LACMA Art + Film Gala held on November 2 in Los Angeles, that’s exactly what Kim K did. The millionaire SKIMS mogul finally put one of his big purchases to good use, using it as the focal point of his Los Angeles gala ensemble. Wearing a crisp white Gucci couture number, flanked by a draped trench coat, also in white, the plunging neck of her look was symmetrically framed by the Attallah Cross bejeweled necklace.

And as you already know, Kim’s neck is not the first to be so elegantly framed by the Attaallah cross. The piece was first spotted on Princess Diana in October 1987 at a charity ball in London held in honor of Birthright, a charity working to protect human rights during pregnancy and childbirth. How did Kim get her hands on such an exclusive piece, you ask? She bid on it at a Sotheby’s auction in 2023 for a very well-deserved price of $298,682.

During these two rather memorable public sightings, the amethyst crucifix was the focal point of two very varied aesthetics. While in Kim’s look the pendant was used spectacularly and very effectively to break the monotony of the all-white ensemble, in Princess Diana’s case the Attaallah cross became a jewel case to match the your. Princess Diana’s self-determined mandate for the evening was obviously a medieval drama, and so she embarked on it in her Catherine Walker dress in black and burgundy velvet, with a high ruffled collar. Attaallah’s cross adorned his torso, blending into the look, but for obvious reasons, seriously standing out.

This one-of-a-kind piece of course has its own story. Created in 1920 by court jeweler Garrard, it was purchased and then loaned to the Princess by her dear friend, the late Naim Attallah, British businessman and writer. The pendant is clearly an heirloom piece, and Ramsay Attallah, Naim’s son, speaks of it with his own memories: “When I was a child we always had it on the table for Christmas lunch, but it didn’t “was never worn by anyone other than Diana and it has not been seen in public since her death,” he recalled, according to a Vogue India report.

Studded with 11 square-cut amethysts and rimmed with gold, silver and a suite of circular-cut diamonds, the pendant is clearly a head-turner and conversation-starter today, as it was ago more than four decades.
