Oversight Board Launches Dashboard to Improve Transparency in Tracking Police Complaints in Detroit

DETROIT – The Detroit Police Oversight Board has launched an online dashboard of citizen complaints against the department and its officers.

Thousands of complaints dating back more than a decade are being drafted and will be released after the new year.

The names of officers and citizens and other personal information will be redacted. However, the rest of the complaint will be made public.

Waiting for, the dashboard launched on Wednesday November 20 presents various data, including the number of complaintstheir status and other information such as race and gender.

“It is of vital importance that the city of Detroit “We want to get all the information we get,” said Darryl Woods, chairman of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners. “We wanted to be as transparent as possible.”

At least one of Detroit’s three police unions is unhappy with the decision.

“I think it’s inappropriate because a lot of these cases haven’t gone to trial,” said Mark Young, president of the Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association. “The data presented here does an injustice to the men and women who risk their lives every day. »

When asked about the refusal, Woods said the scoreboard would be beneficial for everyone.

“There are a lot of false complaints, but there are a lot of real complaints, and we want to decipher them, and you can see for yourself and read for yourself what you consider to be a real complaint and what you consider to be not a genuine complaint,” Woods said.
