Woman missing in the wild for nearly a week found alive, suffering from snake bite

LONDON — A woman who went missing more than a week ago in the wild has been found alive, suffering from a snake bite, authorities said.

The 48-year-old hiker, who has not been publicly identified, went missing in the Snowy Mountains region of southern New South Wales, Australia, on Monday October 21.

Her disappearance was reported to officers at Monaro Police District who “immediately began an investigation into her whereabouts”, according to a statement released by New South Wales Police on Sunday.

“A command post was established at the Kiandra Courthouse on the Snowy Mountains Highway in Kiandra and a search was initiated,” authorities said. “The large-scale search involved officers attached to Monaro Police District with assistance from the Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, SES, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Rural Fire Brigade and from a rescue helicopter. Members of the public also helped.

After surviving alone for almost a week in harsh and rugged bush terrain, the missing and injured woman was found at around 4:50 p.m. local time on Sunday by a National Parks and Wildlife officer on the Nungar Trail Creek at Kiandra, NSW Police said. .

“She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for exposure and what appeared to be a snake bite, before being taken to Cooma District Hospital in a stable condition,” police continued.

It is unclear whether the woman was alone or was separated from the group when she disappeared.

“Police would like to thank those involved in the multi-agency searches, members of the public and the media for their assistance.”
