Politics news: Rayner to replace Starmer on family housing – as minister insists rising inflation is ‘good news’ | Political news

Let’s return for a moment to our previous conversation with Science Secretary Peter Kyle.

He told Sky News that social media companies should be more concerned about the impact of their products, as he confirmed he was considering banning under-16s from using such platforms.

“I’m keeping all options open. The problem is that, at the moment, there is very little evidence.”

Mr Kyle said there were examples of “grotesque impacts” and “this results in loss of life in some circumstances”.

But he added: “We need to know precisely what the impact is, because, and this is one of my frustrations, the tech companies themselves are not building that evidence.

“If I produced products that were used by more than half of the teenagers, sometimes 10-year-olds, sometimes five-year-olds, who have access to these products, I would want to know exactly what the impact of my products is . on these children, on these particularly vulnerable people.

“So I’m trying to do what I can to find out what the evidence is behind the impact of social media on children, young people and vulnerable people so that I can build policies that sometimes might be rigorous policies, but they must be based on solid evidence, because the evidence simply does not exist at the moment.

“And I’m open-minded about what that means for the future.”

Could a ban on social media for under-16s work?
