ANC wants regulations on spaza shops strengthened

The ANC has urged the government to act quickly to tighten regulations around Spaza stores.

This after an increase in suspected cases of food poisoning involving children.

A number of incidents have been reported this month apparently linked to children buying snacks outside of schools.

Four people were arrested in Gauteng on Friday in connection with the deaths of six children, which allegedly occurred in a similar incident in Soweto.

Last week in Mtubatuba, more than 40 students fell ill after eating snacks offered by a vendor outside a school.

Speaking at a special session of the NEC yesterday, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was deeply concerned.

“We also welcome the joint action of several departments, under the leadership of the Minister of Health, to investigate the cause of the hospitalization of children due to suspected contaminated food.”

Health and police ministers are due to provide an update this morning on their investigations into Naledi’s food poisoning, as well as other cases around the country.
