New professional misconduct hearing for ex-West Yorkshire Police detective

A former police officer who posted intimate photos of a woman on social media without her permission will face a new misconduct hearing after new evidence came to light.

Simon Sewell was working as a detective in the Kirklees area at the time of the offense but has since resigned from West Yorkshire Police.

He said the woman could not be identified in the photos, a claim she disputed during a malpractice hearing for Mr. Sewell this week.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said a further hearing would take place “in due course”.

Mr Sewell, who did not attend the hearing, admitted 12 offenses which breached police standards of conduct between June 2020 and May 2023.

These include sharing crime scene photos, making derogatory comments about a woman’s account of being raped, and accessing police records without a legitimate purpose.

He told investigators he had acted under duress when the violations occurred.

West Yorkshire Police said Mr Sewell was not charged with any criminal offenses in relation to the breaches.

The new evidence in his case was produced while the committee was deliberating.

The spokesperson said: “The panel agreed that this new evidence should be considered as part of the case.

“As a result, the panel has now recused itself from the matter and a further hearing will be held to hear all evidence in its entirety in due course.”
