Serious questions are being asked about security’s response at Adelaide’s Marion Shopping Center to the rampage of a naked 18-year-old.

Witnesses say the man, wearing only his socks, knocked over shoppers and confronted a woman with a baby in a pram before throwing glasses and coffee cups from the mall’s Cibo Café and smashing them one by one A.

Police say the 18-year-old is autistic and was experiencing a mental health crisis. He will not face charges.

But it was members of the public, including a woman using a shopping trolley, who intervened to subdue the man, raising concerns about a lack of security response.

“We saw two security guards standing there, not putting a hand on him,” said bystander Michelle Palmer.

Westfield says its security staff’s response was to call emergency services.

The incident has raised questions about why security measures at the center have not been improved, in light of recent attacks at Westfield Bondi and gun battles at Marion and Elizabeth City Centre.

“I don’t know if the person next to me has a knife,” witness Michelle Palmer said.

“I’m not going to take my kids to the shops, I’m just really scared.”
