Airstrikes against residential building “completely destroyed” in central Beirut

A series of airstrikes hit the Basta neighborhood in central Beirut early Saturday, destroying at least one building and leaving a crater in the ground.

Lebanon’s national news agency said Israeli warplanes “completely destroyed an eight-story residential building with five missiles.”

It is unclear how many people were injured or killed, but ambulances rushed to the scene. The Israeli military did not warn residents to evacuate before the attack and did not immediately issue a statement about it.

The strikes, which took place around 4 a.m. local time, followed a day of intensive bombardment against the southern suburbs of Beirut and the coastal city of Tire to the south. The Israeli army had issued evacuation notices before the strikes.

Heavy ground fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants continues in southern Lebanon as Israeli troops move away from the border.

The escalation comes after US envoy Amos Hochstein visited the region this week to try to negotiate a ceasefire deal ending more than 13 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, which escalated in all-out war for the past two months.

Israeli bombings have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon and injured more than 15,000, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. It led to the displacement of around 1.2 million people, or a quarter of the Lebanese population.

On the Israeli side, around 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians have been killed by rockets, drones and missiles in northern Israel and during fighting in Lebanon.
