UPI payments, a cashless payment method via an app from your smartphone, has changed its rules from November 1 (2024). The NPCI will bring two significant changes to UPI Lite from November 1, which will benefit users of popular payment gateways: Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm.

Users will be able to make more payments through UPI Lite than ever before. According to reports, the RBI has increased the transaction limit of UPI Lite. Additionally, when the UPI Lite balance falls below a fixed limit, the user’s account will be automatically replenished.

What is UPI Lite?

All popular UPI payment platforms in India like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm will offer UPI Lite functionality to users. It is a digital wallet that allows small transactions to be made without a PIN or password. To top up money in the UPI Lite wallet, users will have to top up manually. After the new rules come into effect from November 1, users’ wallets will be automatically topped up.

The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) launched the UPI Lite feature some time ago. Users will get a limit of up to Rs 2,000 to recharge this wallet. Users can also make small payments without a PIN via UPI Lite. NPCI announced the auto balance payment feature for UPI Lite only, and this news became official through a notification that was rolled out on August 27, 2024.

Auto Balance Payment Service: What is it and how does it work on UPI Lite?

  • To enable the Auto-Pay Balance service in UPI Lite, users will have to enable it first. They will have to set a minimum limit in the account which will be linked to the UPI Lite wallet.
  • As soon as there is a minimum amount in the wallet, it will be automatically replenished from the user’s account.
  • NPCI has set a maximum limit of Rs 2,000 for UPI Lite.
  • It must be mentioned that users will not be able to recharge their UPI Lite wallet more than 5 times a day.
