Spain’s latest floods: new red alert in Spanish region – as residents told to ‘prepare for more deaths’ | World News

Teams continue to search for bodies in stranded cars and buildings following flash floods in Spain.

The floods have killed at least 158 people, including 155 confirmed deaths in the eastern region of Valencia alone.

But an unknown number of people are still missing and more victims may be found.

“Unfortunately, there are deaths inside some vehicles,” said Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente.

While areas near the city of Valencia were hardest hit by the suffering, the storms also unleashed their fury across vast stretches of the southern and eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

Two deaths were confirmed in the neighboring region of Castilla La Mancha and one in southern Andalusia.

Spain suffered a nearly two-year drought, meaning that when the flood occurred, the ground was so hard that it was unable to absorb the rain, causing flash floods.

This severe weather event surprised regional government officials.

And Spain’s national weather service said it rained more in eight hours in the Valencian town of Chiva than in the previous 20 months.
