Graeme Souness explains how Liverpool can play to be a ‘real threat’ against Arsenal

Liverpool have a big meeting with Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend.

After enjoying what many consider to be a favorable start, the Reds’ season picks up pace on Sunday with a visit to the Emirates.

Although it is undoubtedly the most rigorous test that of Liverpool so far, the Reds at least come into the match in sparkling form.

Arsenal Manager Mikel Arteta praised Arne Slot on Friday for the way he hit the ground while running Anfield Already.

And with Arteta facing serious injury and availability concerns ahead of Sunday’s game, some have started to label Liverpool as favorites against the Gunners.

One of those who expects things to play out this way is the former Reds captain. Graeme Sounesswho explained how Liverpool can be a “real threat” to Arsenal.

Graeme Souness predicts Liverpool game plan

Sunday looks like a real opportunity for Liverpool to get the game underway quickly. Premier League title race.

With Arsenal weakened by injuries and suspension, the Reds can put seven points between themselves and the North Londoners.

Of course, Arteta will have been studying Liverpool all week and looking for the best way to harm Slot’s team.

What he will have seen is a team happy to cede the ball and certain areas of the pitch to the opposition before hurting them at opportune moments.

And write for The daily mailSouness says he believes this game plan can bring more joy to Liverpool on Sunday.

“I liked what they did against Chelsea on Sunday in their 2-1 win,” said the Liverpool legend. “They let Chelsea have more of the ball – and that’s unusual for a team coming to Anfield – but a lot of it was in their own half, and that didn’t worry them. They were happy to see them keep the ball in areas where they weren’t going to get hurt. Then, when the time was right, bang.

“I think we’ll see a similar game play out on Sunday, and that’s where Liverpool pose a real threat to Arsenal.”

Who will be missing from Arsenal?

Although Arsenal have finished ahead of Liverpool in each of the last two seasons, the Reds have always given them at least one good game.

Last season’s game at the Emirates ended 3-1 to the Gunners, but was close until Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker conspired to put Arsenal ahead.

Before that, Liverpool could also have won the topsy-turvy match 3-2 in 2022/23. We must not forget that the Reds moved up to N5 and also won 2-0 in the FA Cup in January.

So the fact is that even at full strength, Arsenal never feel comfortable against Liverpool.

On Sunday they will certainly be missing William Saliba and Martin Odegaard, while it seems likely that Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber will also be absent. The opportunity presents itself for Liverpool.
