Notices issued to farmers on Waqf land will be withdrawn, says Karnataka Law Minister

Bengaluru: Following allegations by a section of farmers in Vijayapura district that their lands were being marked as Waqf properties, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil on Monday said notices issued to them would be removed and that the Deputy Commissioner was investigating the “error”. “

He said the government had no intention of converting farmers’ land into Waqf property and if any mistake was made, it would be rectified and action taken against those responsible.

“Taking note of the error that has occurred, the notices issued will be withdrawn. The reason for the error will have to be investigated and then a decision will be taken (on action taken against those responsible),” Patil said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the district deputy commissioner would investigate the matter and it would take a few days to initiate action to withdraw the notices issued.

“The issue is sensitive, what I can say briefly is that the allegation was that farmers’ land was being converted into Waqf property, the government has no such intention. If anyone has committed such a mistake, it will be rectified and those responsible will be punished…..The land belongs to the one who has to do it,” he added.

Tejasvi Surya, BJP MP from Bangalore South, on Friday met farmers in Vijayapura who found their properties being marked as Waqf assets and lashed out at the Congress government.

Seeking to clarify the “confusion” over the 1,200 acres in Honavada of Tikota taluk marked as Waqf property, Industries Minister MB Patil, in-charge of Vijayapura district, later said it was due to an “error ” in the notification in the official gazette.

He said that only 11 acres out of the 1,200 acres are Waqf properties. He also said that a task force headed by the deputy commissioner will be formed to resolve the issues.

Noting that MB Patil’s statement has ended the controversy, the law minister said that if the BJP wants to prosecute him for political reasons, it is not right.

To a question about the BJP demanding the resignation of Waqf Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan, he said: “Why? If notices have been issued wrongly, there is a deputy district commissioner to remedy it, there is a government above. For the mistake made by Talati (village accountant) or Tahsildar, it is not right to ask for resignation of Zameer or anyone else.
