Pigs heartbroken after Longhorns score golden goal

PENSACOLA, Fla. — Whatever hotel Arkansas is staying at for the SEC football tournament, they might consider changing it. The Razorbacks lost to No. 21 Texas in the semifinals on a golden goal by Lauren Lapomarda in the 109th minute after goalkeeper Keegan Smith couldn’t push the ball over the bar.

In his 13th season as Hogs coach, Colby Hale is still looking for his first SEC tournament victory. Hale has made seven finals, but remains winless.

Arkansas took the lead on an early goal from Kennedy Ball in the 17th minute with a commanding shot through traffic into the upper right corner of the goal.

Arkansas gave Texas the equalizer on an own goal in the 40th minute after Jailyn Brownlee tried to clear a ball in the box from outside, but the ball deflected into the corner of the net.

Arkansas had numerous chances to take the lead in regulation, but Arkansas just couldn’t get past Longhorns goalie Mia Justus. She made 14 saves, including a key save late in regulation in a 1-on-1 situation against Bella Field.

The Razorbacks have also had some bad luck. Arkansas appeared to have a goal down late in the second half, but a light touch by Ava Tankersley in an offside position was erased after video review.

Arkansas now awaits its fate in the NCAA tournament. The selection show will take place Monday at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
