Amid Suits Resurgence, Gabriel Macht Honestly Explains Why He ‘Needed to Get Away’ From Harvey Specter

Suits has experienced a real comeback over the last two years, break streaming records on Netflix while getting an official spin-off titled Costumes: LAwho should play the main role Arrow Stephen Amell. Old and new fans of the franchise got to see some of their favorite OG cast members reunite in the middle of it. Suits recurrence via Super Bowl commercials and a podcast to watch for a long time. Now, with all this renewed interest, the question arises: will we see the original Suits are the characters returning to the franchise? Well, Harvey Specter himself has some answers.

In an interview with E! NewsGabriel Macht, who played attorney Harvey Specter for the duration of the network drama, revealed that he currently has no interest in taking over the trial. Unlike his co-star Patrick J. Adams, who would love to return when the time comes, the Love and other drugs The actor says he “needs to get away” from Harvey because he’s started to see too much of the character in himself:

In the early days, if you asked anyone on set who was the least like their character, they would say me. There was a very relaxed version of me that just wanted to enjoy, not be confrontational, have fun, live and let live and not go in and manipulate situations.

The first days of Suits revealed a very flawed character in Harvey. Someone who treated Louis like dirt, didn’t appreciate Donna enough, and only cared about her individual victories. Many of his selfish decisions came back to bite him in the butt, including hiring Mike Ross as a fake lawyer. While this gave Mike a chance to realize his dream of becoming a lawyer, it opened the door to the world of corporate law and shady business deals – the very world of power that had shaped Harvey’s selfish character into first place.

For someone who is not at all like Specter, it must have been a challenge to play him on points. Some moments, like him yelling at Donna in frustration, come to mind, especially since he’s good friends with Sarah Rafferty in real life. However, when you spend half your time in this costume, such behavior becomes second nature according to Macht:

At some point you become more like Harvey the more you go in, and it’s very hard to shed some of the energy that you have when you’re in that world. I became a lot more like Harvey than when I started, which was another reason I needed to take time off: to allow him to return to where he came from.

As a lead actor, reacting like Harvey would likely become instinctive, and some of that instinctive behavior would rub off on the Macht. We’ve seen this before. In case you’ve forgotten, although I certainly haven’t, Austin Butler spoke with his Elvis accent for a good year and a half after his performance of the Rock and Roll Legend, saying he was unable to let it go.

As for where Harvey comes from, the powerful New York lawyer didn’t start out at Pearson Hardman, where the series is set. Mike Ross was written to be Harvey’s genius and eventual partner in crime. However, despite his lies about his identity, Ross was written to uphold a moral standard that Harvey had since lost. He was often the one who opposed his boss’s questionable choices. I think part of this character is meant to remind Harvey of his early days as a lawyer in the DA’s office.

Although we never see Harvey completely shake his self-centered behavior, there is plenty of character growth in the series finale, including parts of Harvey where Macht finds himself within the character, as he said:

When you look at different elements of the show, there are so many pieces of myself that align with him and a lot of his toxic male masculinity that I don’t subscribe to. I think he’s selfish and controlling, but underneath he has a heart of gold, which is why we ultimately care for him.

And it’s true, we learn to love Harvey and all his faults. By the end of the series, he’s been through so much, and as a viewer, you just want him to be able to find peace and happiness. That being said, I don’t blame Macht for taking a permanent step back, and I wonder why his advice would be for actors coming to fill those polished designer shoes.

Anyway, I will put my Peacock Subscription wisely when NBC finally drops this highly anticipated spin-off series, Costumes: LA. The OG cast will always hold a special place in my heart, including Harvey Specter. Nobody does it like him, and you can relive all the drama of Suits at any time with a Netflix subscription.
