Jose Mourinho: Fenerbahce coach criticizes Turkish referees after Trabzonspor win

Jose Mourinho condemned refereeing standards in Türkiye after his Fenerbahce side scored the winner in the 102nd minute to cap off a dramatic match against Trabzonspor.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham manager sprinted onto the pitch and attempted a knee slide as Sofyan Amrabat’s late stoppage-time goal earned a 3-2 victory on Sunday.

However, Mourinho was unhappy with the home side Trabzonspor being awarded two penalties – both after consultations with the video assistant referee (VAR) – and believed his side should have had a penalty before the winning goal of Amrabat.

The 61-year-old even wondered why he came to Türkiye.

Speaking at length to broadcaster beIN Sports, Mourinho criticized the performance of referee Oguzhan Cakir and VAR official Atilla Karaoglan.

“I blame the people at Fenerbahçe who brought me here,” said Mourinho, who took over at the club in June. “They only told me half the truth.

“They didn’t tell me the whole truth because if they told me the whole truth I wouldn’t come.

“But, with half the truth and my boys, we fight our adversaries and the system.”

Mourinho added: “He (Karaoglan) was careful to give the two penalty decisions that the referee didn’t call, then he was having Turkish tea when it was a clear penalty for us and he didn’t call it. given.”

Fenerbahce moved to second place in the Turkish top flight, five points behind leaders Galatasaray, after their victory.

“The man of the match was Atilla Karaoglan,” Mourinho added.

“We didn’t see him but he was the referee. The referee was just a little boy who was there on the pitch, but the referee was Atilla Karaoglan.

“He goes from the invisible man to the most important man in the game.

“I think I speak for all Fenerbahce fans: we don’t want him anymore.

“We don’t want him as VAR. We don’t want him on the pitch but, on VAR, even less.”
