North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that flew for the longest flight duration on record and with a theoretical range capable of striking the U.S. mainland. The armies of South Korea and Japan reported Thursday.

It is North Korea’s first ICBM launch since December and comes as the reclusive nuclear-armed country may seek to attract U.S. attention ahead of the ICBM launch . Presidential election of November 5.

The launch also comes as the country has stepped up its rhetoric against U.S. allies South Korea and Japan, and NATO and the Pentagon say North Korea has sent messages 10,000 soldiers to train in eastern Russia for possible deployment to Ukraine to support Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war effort.

The ICBM remained in the air for 86 minutes, breaking its previous record of 13 minutes. It was launched near Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, and traveled about 620 miles before crashing into the sea off Japan.

However, as the missile was fired at what The Japanese Ministry of Defense described as a “very high” angle, reaching an altitude of around 4,350 miles, meaning it could in theory have flown much further. Anchorage, Alaska is less than 3,700 miles from North Korea. Washington, DC is approximately 6,800 miles from Pyongyang.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Thursday’s launch showed “our willingness to respond to our enemies,” according to comments he made to his country’s defense ministry. state media. Kim described the test as an “appropriate military action.”

White House National Security Council spokesperson Sea Savett said in a statement that the test was a “blatant violation” of several U.N. Security Council resolutions. Savell said the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command assessed that the launch “did not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, or its territory, or to our allies.”
