New app from Children’s National Hospital helps identify signs of concussion in athletes

We’re in the thick of football season – whether it’s Monday Night Football or Friday Night Lights – and before the action, there’s an app from Children’s National Hospital called SCORE This will help you identify if your child, partner, teammate or anyone else has a suspected concussion.

“SCORE” means Safe – Concussion – Outcome – Recovery and Education.

7News Adrianna Hopkins spoke with the app’s creator, Pediatric neuropsychologist Dr Gérard Gioiawith National Children’s Hospital.

He said that often people think of loss of consciousness only as a sign of concussion. But this only happens in less than 10% of concussion cases. He said you should look for signs including:

  • Is the person going slowly?
  • Are you having trouble collecting your thoughts?
  • Are you in pain?
  • Dizzy?
  • Imbalance?

“That’s what should entice you to grab the app and go through it more specifically. And the nice thing about it is that the app provides a little report of what you just, you know, said. You can email it to your health care provider and say, here’s what’s happening,” says Dr. Gioia.

Dr. Gioia said a medical professional won’t always be nearby when your child falls off a bike or skateboard. Having this app and report will give you a head start in preventing further trauma to that person’s brain.
