Nurse and partner married at Royal Preston Hospital amid terminal cancer diagnosis

She and her partner Jamie, 44, from Liverpool, have been together for more than five years and live in Preston with their baby Mikey and daughters Eirwen and Sofia.

The couple had recently purchased a new home before Emily’s diagnosis.

Emily, who now works at the Sue Ryder Neurological Care Center in Fulwood, undertook her nursing training at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

She has recently spent more time in the hospital than in her new home.

Emily said: “We would have done it at home but I was ill and had to come back to hospital so we did it here. The Ribblesdale area made it so beautiful for us, the room was decorated, it was so special. I was allowed a few friends, my witnesses, and I had my white pajamas and my fluffy socks and I had a great day.

“We were married in the bedroom in a lovely service, then went down to the chapel, where we were greeted by Chaplain Martin and a few other members of staff, the hospitable family they have become. Martin blessed the rings, read a lovely poem and a few words, and it was uplifting.

“The chaplaincy was so lovely, there was a screen with our name on it and everyone put in so much effort. We were both very touched and I am very grateful to everyone for that.

“We would have loved to have all our friends and family there, but our goal is, hopefully, when I am well enough to welcome them.” But I wouldn’t change this day for anything, it was a beautiful day and it completely lifted my spirits, as well as Jamie’s.

“I hope this has also lifted the morale of the parish. We can’t thank everyone here enough, everyone in the department, the IRDU unit (interventional radiology team), because they took part in the day and also gave us a lovely card and a gift. I even had a porters card.

“It was an incredible day; I just want to thank everyone here and tell them they are doing an amazing job.

In May, Emily had surgery to remove a cyst and subsequent biopsies suggested she was cancer free.

After undergoing preventative chemotherapy, but after a third cycle, she returned to the hospital and was confirmed to have a rare secondary mucinous adenocarcinoma.

“I’m still struggling and processing it all, miracles can happen, you have to focus on positive affirmations and be grateful for everything.

“I’m not ready and I feel more at peace, more blessed, because you have time to appreciate everything that everyone is doing, all your friends and your support. Every day is a blessing.

“I have been away from my children, but to make sure I come home with them, it is very important for me to take advantage of this time. I can’t think of anything better. I am very positive about this.

Their wedding day was one Jamie will never forget: “It was one of the most special days of my life – and these last five years have been the best of my life since I met Emily .”

Ward manager Danielle Jackson said: “It was lovely to be part of Emily and Jamie’s special day, celebrating her as part of her hospital family. »

Senior Chaplain, Reverend Martin McDonald, added: “It is always a great joy to be able to respond to people’s wishes, particularly at crucial life events. Being a part of Jamie and Emily’s big day was a true blessing and an incredible team effort from the wonderful staff at our hospital.
