How many schools are there in each league?

The first College Football PlayoffRankings have dropped and, of course, different conferences are now rating their representation. The ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC, and Group of Five all have ranked teams, but not all are as well organized as the others.

THE the first rankings don’t mean everythingbut they give us a window into the conferences favored by the committee. Automatic bidding for conference champions ensures that at least one team from each major conference will be in the bracket. Still, second-place teams that aren’t already well-positioned might be out of luck.

So let’s look at the conferences that have the most teams in the Top 25?

As expected, the SEC leads the rest of the conferences with eight teams, including four in the projected 12-team bracket.

The ACC actually has more teams (5) than the Big Ten (4). However, the ACC only has one team (Miami) in the bracket, while all four Big Ten teams (Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State and Indiana) would participate.

The Big 12 corresponded to the Big Ten, but like the ACC, they only have one bracket representative. They have three teams ranked 17th through 20th (Iowa State, Kansas State and Colorado).

The five ACC teams are ranked in the Top 25.

Miami is the projected conference champion while SMU just misses out on a spot in the bracket. The fact is, these five ranked teams have a chance to compete by winning the conference. It’s still a wide open race.

The Big Ten doesn’t have a lot of teams, but the ones it does have are powerful.

The top two spots belong to Big Ten powers, while the other two have a strong chance of making it whether they win the conference or not. All four teams have a chance to go to Indianapolis where they would punch their ticket to the CFP with a win. Even so, Ohio State’s ranking at No. 2 is a very good sign that they could lose to Indiana and still get in easily.

The Big 12 has four ranked teams, but it looks like only one of them will get in.

BYU is currently projected as a No. 4 seed with the conference title under its belt. Iowa State, Kansas State and Colorado will all try to spoil the party. Based on the ranking in the opening rankings, it will be difficult for the Big 12 to enter two teams. This automatic offer is going to be essential.

Only the top-ranked Group of Five team is guaranteed a spot in the bracket and for now, they will travel to Boise State. The committee actually ranked them 12th for merit.

Group of five:

Army’s ranking is one of the most controversial points in the top rankings, barely making the Top 25. They have an upcoming game against Notre Dame to prove they deserve a higher ranking.

Speaking of Notre Dame…

Independents:

The Fighting Irish need to win to maintain their place in the group, but they are well placed to do so.

Washington State technically doesn’t have a conference as a member of the defunct Pac-12, but they could make it interesting if they keep winning.
