Property and personal property taxes open November 1 in Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Missouri real estate and personal property taxes opened for business on Friday, November 1. Remember, they are due by the end of the year.

“Personal property, meaning cars, trucks, toys and real estate, is due and payable between November 1 and December 31, and if a taxpayer fails to pay, and when I say paid, payment must be received before December. 3, a penalty and interest will be applied,” said Greene County Collector Allen Icet.

Property is everything you owned on the first of the year. You will have to if it is real estate and not an escrow. If it’s personal, you’ll owe it if you owned the property last year. Even if you sold it this year, it’s still considered owned for this year’s property taxes.

Taxes are used for various things.

“At the top left of that statement, it actually gives a breakdown of the different taxing jurisdictions, for example schools, fire districts and library districts, that we as taxpayers pay for,” Icet said.

You can expect to receive your statement by mail in the coming weeks and possibly sooner online.

“The paper version of the declaration should be available by the end of November. We try to get it as soon as possible, but every year brings different challenges. So I would say if anyone has not received this statement in the mail by Thanksgiving, please call or contact them, and again, it may have been mailed and returned to the office. So we want to make sure that everyone has their declaration in hand,” Icet said.

There are many ways to pay. Many counties accept payments online, in person and by mail, and some accept payments over the phone.

“Everyone does it differently. Some people want the convenience of being online. They can pay from home at midnight. It works. Some people still like to walk in, hand the cashier a check and get that receipt immediately. I understand that, and some prefer to wait until the last minute, and with the telephone option it is, I believe, just as convenient, in a way, a little more convenient than the online option, but we try therefore meet the needs of taxpayers. , because they are all different, but you have to give them several options on how to pay to make it as easy as possible,” Icet said.

Keep in mind that if you don’t pay by December 31, meaning your check is postmarked by December 31, you will be charged about 11% more for fees and interest.

“What happens is in January there is a 10% payment or lumber excuse, a 10% penalty and a 2% interest charge. So if your tax bill is $100, you’ll pay 111. If your tax bill is $1,000, you’ll pay $110 more, so it goes up, obviously, the more you owe. That’s why I encourage people, for those who procrastinate and are procrastinators in Greene County, to just make sure the payment gets made,” Icet said.

Remember, just because taxes are open today doesn’t mean your county is already ready. If you have any questions, contact your collector before coming to the courthouse.
