Ukrainians change their minds about the war

Ukrainians change their minds about Russia-Ukraine Warand a little more than half now want to negotiate to put an end to it, according to a new survey carried out by Gallup.

The survey, conducted in August and October, finds that 52% of Ukrainians favor peace talks “as soon as possible”, 38% think they should continue fighting, and 9% don’t know or refuse to respond.

A majority (52%) also believe Ukraine should be willing to make some territorial concessions as part of a peace deal, with 38% disagreeing.

After 1,000 days of war against RussiaUkrainians’ opinions have changed dramatically since 2022, when a previous Gallup poll found that 73% believed their country should fight until victory. Only 22% believe that kyiv should negotiate an end to the war as soon as possible.

News week contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Gallup for comment via email.

Benedict Vigers, senior global news editor at Gallup, said News week: “Our latest poll in Ukraine shows that after more than two years of war, many Ukrainians now believe their country should seek to negotiate an end to the war as quickly as possible.

“Public opinion has changed significantly as the war has progressed, with the percentage of people wanting Ukraine to negotiate a quick end having doubled since 2023 (from 22 percent to 52 percent). Support for continuing the fight to victory has decreased not only in the regions closest to the front lines, but throughout the country, falling this year below 50 percent in all regions of Ukraine.

The desire to fight until victory began to decline noticeably in 2023, when 63% of Ukrainians wanted to continue the fight, compared to 27% who wanted to negotiate an end.

Support for continued fighting has declined everywhere this year. In previous years, eastern and southern Ukraine, where most of the fighting took place, were the most opposed to the war, while the less affected areas of northern and western Ukraine Ukraine were eager to continue the victory, Gallup found.

The Ukrainian concept of victory has also changed since the start of the war. In 2022, the vast majority (92%) believed that victory meant reconquering territories lost since 2014, including Crimea. That figure fell to 81 percent this year.

The majority of respondents were in favor of EU. as peace brokers, 70 percent, or in the United Kingdom, 63 percent. The United States was supported by about half of those surveyed to play a role in the negotiations.

President-elect Donald Trump has already declared that he will end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours” upon taking office and, since his re-election, details of his advisors’ plans have been revealed, including in favor of a ceasefire while freezing borders on the current front lines.

In this scenario, Russia preserve the territory he seized and aspects of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskythe peace plan, in particular by joining NATOwouldn’t happen.

News week reached out to the Trump transition team for comment via email.

Zelensky has already rejected Trump’s peace planand the Ukrainian leader also spoke defiantly against accepting a compromise.

“We are an independent country. And during this war, our people and I, in negotiations with the United States, with Trump, Biden and European leaders, have proven that the rhetoric of ‘sit and listen’ did not work with us,” he said in an interview with Ukrainian radio.

Zelensky is determined to secure a secure future with Russia. He posted onformerly Twitter: “1,000 days of war. 1,000 days since the Ukrainians kicked Putin in the teeth. We must end this war – and end it justly. But we must do it in a way that ensures that Putin, no matter how toothless he is, will never return to Ukraine. We must be sure of that.”
