Trump victory: Hollywood elite who vowed to leave US if he wins are all talk, no walk, expert says

In the months leading up to the 2024 presidential election, many celebrities have proudly expressed their opinions on President-elect Donald Trump.

While some showed their support, others, including Sharon Stone, Cher and Barbra Streisand, expressed their disapproval and even threatened to leave the United States if elected.

“I’m definitely considering a house in Italy,” Stone told the Daily Mail in July. “I think it’s a smart construct right now. It’s one of the first times in my life that I’ve seen someone run for office on an agenda of hate and oppression.”

“Every four years you hear the same recycled rhetoric from celebrities. It’s become a running joke at this point. It’s ‘all talk, no walk,'” Eldridge told Fox News Digital.

In 2016, celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Miley Cyrus, Amy Schumer, George Lopez and more vowed to pack up and move if Trump was elected president.

While it’s unclear whether Streisand, Cher and Stone are actually considering leaving, Eldridge says their decision is expected to have “little to no impact” on their success.

“The impact on careers and the impact on their fan base are two separate questions, but the answers overlap and are actually interdependent,” Eldridge said. “Politically speaking, Hollywood has always been a bastion of liberal ideology, so the usual anti-Republican sentiments we hear every four years will have little to no impact on an actor’s ability to get work. future roles.

“On the other hand, however, talent is only 50% of an actor’s casting ability; the other half is based on fan appeal, Q score, and box office market value “, he added. “The ‘fan base’ variable will likely become increasingly relevant on the other side of this election.”

“Trump not only won the electoral college, he also won the popular vote, which was the first time a Republican had done that in 20 years,” Eldridge continued. “That said, while directors and producers always happily choose an outspoken actor, regardless of their bold rhetoric, fans might be less forgiving. More than half the country used their voice to vote, which could have repercussions on some of the more outspoken celebrity voters who were seeking influence and trying to put their thumb on the scale.”

“Please unfollow me if you voted against women’s rights,” Christina Applegate wrote on X. “Against disability rights. Yeah, that. Unfollow me because what you you did is unreal. I don’t want followers like that. So yeah. Also after Today I’m going to close this fan account that I’ve had for so many years because it’s sick.”

Mandy Moore shared her thoughts on her Instagram Stories, writing: “Shout out to all of us for dealing with our grief, our disbelief, our anger, our fear, our uncertainty, our devastation while moving on with our lives and putting a brave face on our families. .. I see you. Let’s be tender to ourselves and to each other.”

Hulk Hoganwho expressed support for Trump, wrote: “Believe it or not brother, we are more alike than different. This election season has shown how much we all care about the direction this country is going. Let’s remember that it doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, we are all real Americans. It’s time to come together, talk with our neighbors and focus on what unites us. and we are all up for building a better future. I love you all.

As the aftermath of the election continues to affect people in different ways, Eldridge says those with a platform should consider one thing.

“The most logical thing a celebrity could say at this point, at least among those who have vowed to leave the country if Trump is elected, would be: ‘He wasn’t my vote, but as an American , he is my president.” Whether you supported him or not, it is time for all of us to come together as a country and make this country what we all know it is capable of being, of to become or remain great. This level of humility and magnanimity would be very useful in this day and age.
