LG Display has developed a screen that can expand from 12 to 18 inches, making the prototype currently the most expandable screen in the world.

The prototype, which LG unveiled on Friday at its Sciencepark R&D complex in Gangseo district, west of Seoul, can be twisted, stretched and bent in all directions like a rubber band – unlike rollable, foldable and foldable displays currently on the market. which can only evolve in a limited way. The company claims it can be stretched up to 10,000 times.

The MicroLED display has a pixel density of 100 pixels per inch, which is about what you would find in a 21- to 24-inch monitor with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. It is capable of displaying colors complete with its RGB pixels, the company said, and can “maintain its image quality in extreme temperatures and external shocks.”

The 50% expandable screen is an improvement over the company’s most recent prototype from 2022, which was able to expand its screen size by 20%. Samsung introduced an expandable panel in August that can expand by 25%.

Key to the device’s rubbery quality is its silicon-based substrate, also used in contact lenses, as well as a new wiring system.

“Stretchable displays are thin and lightweight, and they have the ability to adhere to irregular surfaces such as clothing and skin,” LG Display said in a press release on Sunday. “The technology is expected to be applicable to the fashion, clothing and mobility sectors. »
The company showcased its expandable technology at Seoul Fashion Wee 2024 in September, with displays applied to clothing and bags.

LG is developing the new display as part of a project led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. LG Display was chosen to lead the project in 2020 in collaboration with other domestic companies.

The company also demonstrated other expandable display concepts at Friday’s event, including a sign that twists into a convex shape, designed for use in cars, and a portable sign for firefighters that provides a live news feed.

“(LG Display) will continue to work closely with local industry, academia and researchers to build a future sustainable display ecosystem,” said Yoon Soo-young, CTO of LG Display.
