SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. (Gray News) – Authorities say a 1-year-old child was found dead in a car outside a Florida middle school after a family member forgot to drop him off at daycare.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:18 p.m. Friday to a call about a dead baby in a car outside South Sumter Middle School. according to a press release.

An investigation revealed that the one-year-old child had been unintentionally left in the car by a family member. Authorities say the child was supposed to be dropped off at daycare, but the parent forgot the child and went to the school.

The child, aged 1, was found dead in the car later that day.

“This is a tragic situation and our hearts go out to the child’s family,” the sheriff’s office wrote in the release.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing in coordination with the medical examiner’s office and the state’s attorney’s office.
