This week’s Matlock confirmed my theory about who the big bad is, but I’m still not sure it’s a Slam Dunk

Warning: spoilers for Matlock Episode 4 – “The Rabbit and the Falcon” are in session. If you’re not aware of this week’s case, you’ve been warned.

One of the great successes of TV schedule 2024 was the continuation of the adventures of the reimagined Matlock. With a killer Kathy Bates twist in the first episodean overarching mystery has been brought into play involving the woman some know as Matty Matlock. The former lawyer, actually named Madeline Kingston, played a game with the law firm Jacobson & Moore to determine which of the three senior lawyers at the top was indirectly responsible for her daughter’s death.

I have my suspicions about who the culprit is, and this week’s episode, “The Rabbit and the Hawk,” seems to have confirmed that theory. But even with so-called irrefutable evidence staring us all in the face, I suspect this may not be the final word on the matter.

Madeline Matlock’s three main suspects

From the pilot to MatlockMadeline had three suspects in mind. Their alleged crime was hiding documents that allowed major pharmaceutical company Welbrexa Pharmaceuticals to keep a deadly addictive opioid on the market. Since this drug was responsible for her daughter’s death, it was all she needed to begin her quest.

Which brings us to the three Jacobson & Moore lawyers who are at the heart of Matlock conspiracy counsel: managing partner Howard Markston (Beau Bridges), senior associate Julian Markston (Jason Ritter), and junior associate Olympia Lawrence (Skye P. Marshall). Four episodes later, the evidence appears to be quite strongly against one party in particular; and at first glance it is difficult to object.

My suspicions about Howard seem to be stronger than ever

From the first arguments put forward in this pilot episode, I had the feeling that Howard was the person who best suited this project. Matlock big bad. From a practical standpoint, Beau Bridges may not want to have a regular role on television, so his status as a recurring character gives him an opportunity to test it out. But more importantly, the man some call “Senior” showed his true colors in this week’s case.

While artist Robert Walton (John Billingsley) won a $6 million judgment in his wrongful death lawsuit against his building, that victory was short-lived. Senior apparently had a sleepless night restructuring Foundation Financials, the company that just acquired the building, allowing the company to put that part of its portfolio into bankruptcy.

A man who can stand to declare bankruptcy in two stages in Texas, as well as destroy documents to cover his tracks, is someone who could surely withhold documents like these. For now, Madeline appears to have a key piece of evidence, as she photographed Howard’s signature on a document containing a full, unexpurgated report covering the Welbrexa affair. But for now, let’s quickly look at why our other suspects are in the clear for now.

Olympia and Julian don’t seem too bad at the moment

For the first part of Matlock In the first season’s arc, the focus was on Madeline’s attempts to eliminate Olympia’s potential role in all of this. But starting with Matlock The surprisingly personal moments of episode 3there was a gradual softening of his character. And “The Rabbit and the Hawk” certainly didn’t make her look any more hardened, since she outright denounced Howard’s tactics.

Julian, soon to become her ex-husband, was there with her and even smuggled glass items from Senior’s trophy case to smash with a golf club. So not only does he seem to support his estranged wife, but it’s possible these crazy kids could get back together. If my hopes for the return of Matlock theme song I have to die so that Olympia and Julian can potentially stay together for the child…I allow it.

Why I know almost for sure that Matlock hasn’t revealed this mystery yet

This is episode 4 of Matlockwhich just received a renewal for a second season. So if the case of the crooked advisor is to be the fulcrum of action, we are probably only at the beginning. As Madeline Kingston said herself, she has to prove that Howard is the party that made this decision.

It’s going to take some more research, maybe a few more scrapes with Mrs. B in the file room, and some new tensions brewing at home. Madeline’s quest for justice is far from over just yet, and the adventure will continue next Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, with the release of “Claws” in episode 5.
