Providing sailing information to sailors

Published on November 1, 2024

After several active seasons in Europe, the International Kitesurfing Association (IKA) is partnering with the World Ice and Snow Sailing Association (WISSA) to host the Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships in the United States.

The 2025 event is scheduled to take place February 3-8 on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. The competition will include course racing, a marathon and freestyle/big air kite flying. In addition, WISSA organizes sled and wing course races as well as short track slalom.

Using the same kites as KiteFoil Racing, competitors on skis or snowboards can harness the wind to reach speeds of up to 50 knots on snow-covered Lake Mendota while spectators watch the action from the deck observation deck at the Edgewater Hotel.

“This event is a homecoming for us Americans and a great honor to roll out the red carpet for many friendly international competitors,” said Steve Cohan of Madison. The event is sanctioned by WISSA and IKA.

The championships will be held in conjunction with the 2025 Frozen Assets Festival, a popular local event that celebrates the beauty and recreational opportunities of Madison’s lakes in winter.
