Samsung’s One UI 7 probably won’t arrive until next year – and that’s not enough

Some things never change, and no matter what Google and other Android phone makers might do this, they never seem to be able to speed up the process of rolling out Android updates. This isn’t a problem for Google’s Pixel phones, but everyone else using Android phones has to wait until whoever made their device gets their act together.

In recent years, some of these phone makers have picked up the slack and rolled out updates to their flagships quite quickly. Samsung seemed to be one of these companies – last year One UI 6 brought Android 14 on Samsung Galaxy phones in late October.

But that same turnaround didn’t happen this year with One UI 7 – aka Android 15.

One UI 7 full update is rumored won’t arrive until next yearscheduled for the launch of Galaxy S25. We haven’t even seen a beta yet (although reports suggest that could change soon), and that makes me think Samsung may have dropped the ball.

We first heard about One UI 7 launches in Mayshortly after Google revealed a bunch of information about Android 15 to its Google I/O 2024 developers conference. Reportedly, Samsung was already internally testing a beta version of One UI 7. At the time, we thought this meant the beta would be widely released soon after, giving a handful of people their first look at the Samsung version on Android 15. .

This never actually happened. In July we learned that the beta could be launched a few weeks laterready for a full One UI 7 release in October. Instead, the beta suffered numerous delays and was reportedly set aside “indefinitely” at the beginning of August. It was only recently, after Samsung’s developer conference in early October, that we started hearing more positive news about the update.

Well, “positive” in the sense that the work was progressing. But less positive about how long we’ll apparently have to wait for both the beta and full One UI 7 rollout. But the news was that the the beta could arrive in mid-Novemberlater reports suggesting November 17 as the date in question. While it’s not too far from where we are currently, it’s pretty far from the summer release that many people were waiting for and hoping for.

As for the final version of One UI 7, it apparently won’t arrive before the Samsung Galaxy S25 launches at a point not specified next year. Normally, new Samsung flagships arrive in late January or early February, and so far we haven’t heard anything to suggest that Samsung will deviate from the usual schedule.

If that ends up being the case, that means Samsung will be three to four months behind the release of Android 15, which hit Pixel phones in early October. This is also the last major One UI update released by Samsung since the inception of One UI in 2018. Previously, the only new numbered version of One UI that did not launch in October or November was One UI 3 It was published on December 2. 2020, and I imagine you can blame a lot of things happening in 2020 for this brief delay.

As for the cause of the delay with One UI 7, we simply don’t know. All we know is that it hasn’t arrived yet and Samsung hasn’t given an explanation.

Android 15 was also a bit complicated

Android 15 itself hasn’t had the smoothest launch either, come to mention. The release schedule may differ from year to year, but new Android versions typically arrive in late summer or October, around the time Google launches its new Pixel phones.

This year it was a little different, since the Pixel 9 the series arrived a few months earlier, at the end of August. This was around the time when new versions of Android were released in the past, although that hadn’t been the case last year with Android 14. Unfortunately, Android 15 didn’t arrive early, which means Google launched Pixel 9 phones with Android 14 installed. .

All Pixel owners were forced to wait until October for an update to the latest version, itself in public beta since April. Stranger still, Android 15 has been officially declared complete and submitted to the Open Source project over a month before it starts rolling out to users’ phones.

This is rather embarrassing for Google, and I wonder if that’s why the company push to release Android 16 in spring 2025 to prevent this type of situation from happening again. Or at the very least, it could ensure this doesn’t happen again two years in a row.

I’m not sure if the strange Android 15 rollout had any impact on the issues plaguing One UI 7. It seems unlikely, given that Samsung has been having issues for several months and Google has managed to release several beta versions without incident. But it’s rather strange that the two biggest players in the Android world have strange Android 15 rollouts.

Interestingly, OnePlus has been on the ball with its own Android 15 variant, officially dubbed OxygenOS 15. While OxygenOS 14 did not land until mid-November 2023version 15 was available before the end of October 2024 and launched just weeks after Android 15 arrived on Pixel phones. This is great for OnePlus owners and makes Samsung’s delayed schedule all the more embarrassing in contrast.

Conclusion

Overall, the fact that Samsung is late to the Android 15 party probably doesn’t matter too much. People will update when they update, and the lack of One UI 7 won’t force them to flee to another type of phone. That said, considering the progress Samsung has made in developing new Android updates since the first version of One UI launched, it’s disappointing to see such a long delay.

Samsung is a major player in the smartphone industry and one of the largest Android phone makers in the world, especially outside of China. Honestly, the company needs to do better than this.

The staggered release of Android updates to all phones has been a problem for a long time, and it’s one of the things Apple likes to make fun of every chance it gets. (When iOS updates are available, they are available to everyone who owns a compatible iPhone.) Although Google has done much to improve the speed at which phone makers can develop their own Android updates, the popularity from Samsung means it must play its part to achieve this. arrive.

Right now, Android 15 is pretty inconsequential when it comes to phone updates. It’s annoying and doesn’t exactly fix major operating system issues. But there will be a time when Google needs to fix a huge problem immediately – and in those cases, Samsung (and others) can’t afford to spend months doing nothing.
